 Daniel Goldstein never liked the looks of his TV. He’d hide it away in an old Chinese wedding cabinet that didn’t quite close, and one day he shut the doors before the TV was off and noticed the way the light played through the slit.

“I thought, ‘That’s really cool,’ ” said the San Francisco sculptor, photographer and artist, who partners with John Kapellas on large installations around the world.

It was a serendipitous moment that led to the creation of TV2ART, which provides a way of not only concealing the television screen but also creating a work of art, formed by the play of the TV’s light through tiny dots on a “Lightascope,” an art screen of a horizon, a seascape or any number of abstract patterns. “They’re like stained glass,” Goldstein said, “rich and beautiful.”

The screens are designed to be pretty whether they’re open or closed, with the TV on or off. The latest model, the media center, has shelf space for DVDs and was well received by hotels and home stagers at a spring trade show.

“There are a lot of products now that hide the TV, but we’re the only ones who hide the TV and provide entertainment too,” Goldstein said.
